Example use cases

Four prepared views that show what the maps can answer. Each one opens the webapp ready to go, and from there you can change anything.

Data

Download the grids

Every monthly map is a GeoTIFF in WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) at 0.1° resolution, values in ‰ VSMOW.

In the webapp

Download the map on screen, a ZIP for any range of months, or the time series of up to five locations as CSV. Each can include the other isotope as well.

Complete dataset

All months of both isotopes as one NetCDF file, archived with a DOI in the HUN-REN ARP research data repository.

Method

How the isoscapes are made

Separate models for δ¹⁸O and δ²H, from station measurements to a monthly grid.

  1. Measurements Monthly isotope records of precipitation from monitoring stations across Europe and Asia Minor.
  2. Predictors 22 environmental predictors, mainly ERA5 climate reanalysis variables and geographic descriptors, chosen by feature pruning.
  3. Geographical XGBoost Local models anchored on stations with a distance kernel, blended with one global model.
  4. Monthly grid Predictions on a 0.1° grid for every month, 1950–2025, validated at stations withheld from training.

Method report

An interactive walkthrough of the data, the model, its validation and the long-term trends.

What's new

PrismEU Isoscapes app v63.1 · isoscape v.3.0.0

v63.1 Usage statistics written during the visit Latest 1 1

Anonymous visit records are stored when a visit starts and kept up to date while it lasts.

Improved

  • A visit is recorded when it starts and refreshed every minute, so open visits are visible in the statistics and a server restart no longer loses them.

Fixed

  • Visits could go missing from the statistics when the database file was replaced while the app was running.
v63.0 Transect profiles, statistics drawn in the browser, new mark 5 4 5 2 1

Draw a profile between two points on the map or the globe, a richer statistics panel and an app that updates itself from a new isoscape release.

New

  • Transect tool on the 2D map and the 3D globe: click A and B, drag them to adjust. The profile follows the great circle and shows the layer on the map with the terrain below.
  • Transect band: ± 1 standard deviation of the calendar month between the years (Mean: around the mean; Month: around the long-term mean, drawn dashed; Anomaly: around zero). Trend profiles fade where p > 0.05.
  • δ¹⁸O + δ²H in one transect: the second isotope on a right axis scaled along the global meteoric water line. CSV export of the profile.
  • Statistics panel beside the map (below it on phones), resizable: histogram linked to the map, latitude and longitude profiles, monthly mosaic, zoomable time series, anomaly bars with a running mean, isotope spiral and the distribution of the calendar-month means.
  • Isotope spiral: a polar heatmap of every month from above that tilts into a 3D tower of years; mean, median, minimum, maximum or anomaly; play and pause at any month.

Improved

  • The Points time series uses the same style as the statistics, with a navigator strip that also sets the months of the table and the CSV.
  • Every chart has axis titles and units (‰).
  • Refined PrismEU mark (sharp drop, even stroke) in the header, loader, favicon and link preview.
  • Redesigned changelog with release dates, categories and filters.

Fixed

  • Ridgeline tooltip showed the month above the curve under the pointer.
  • Anomaly running mean stopped years before the end of the series.
  • Spiral selection was drawn between two months after rotating the disc.
  • Pins of the Point time series card on the Downloads page drifted across the picture.
  • The app did not start when the terra package was loaded in the same R session.

Data

  • A new isoscape release only needs the GeoTIFFs and the precompute: year ranges, trend periods, texts and the official trend file follow the data; stale trend maps are recomputed automatically.
  • Elevation (WorldClim 2.1, averaged to the 0.1° grid) and the year-to-year standard deviation of every calendar month in the data cache (precompute --extras).

Removed

  • Server-side Plotly statistics charts and the upload of the trend grid to the server (everything is drawn in the browser now).
v62.0 Downloads, monthly trends and phones 4 3 1 1

A new Downloads page, trends of single calendar months and a layout that works on phones and tablets.

New

  • Downloads page with a bento layout: GeoTIFF of one month or of a range packed as a ZIP with progress, optionally with the other isotope.
  • Trends of the full monthly series and of single calendar months, precomputed for periods bounded by decades plus 1961–1990 and 1991–2020.
  • Mobile and tablet layout: menu button, controls drawer / bottom sheet and a bottom navigation bar.
  • Privacy page and cookieless, anonymous usage statistics.

Improved

  • d-excess has its own switch; it has no trend layer.
  • Redesigned Example use cases with live map thumbnails.
  • Link previews and search-engine metadata; developer-preview badge.

Fixed

  • Trend layer of d-excess returned an error (404).

Removed

  • Seasonal and annual means (they would need weighting by precipitation amount); the Mean layer shows calendar-month means.
v61.0 New design, maps drawn in the browser 4 1

Light and dark themes, instant month switching and new map layers.

New

  • Light (Glacier) and dark (Polar Night) themes.
  • Mean, anomaly and trend layers; month playback; compare two months on the 2D map.
  • Up to five locations with annual cycle and trend statistics, place search, shareable links, PNG export and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Landing page with Explore, Data & API, Method, Publications and FAQ sections.

Improved

  • The browser draws the maps from compact precomputed grids: month switches are instant and the colour map can be changed.
v60.0 Partners 1 1

Improved

  • Jožef Stefan Institute partner logo; footer with the institute logo.

Removed

  • Method report withheld until the publication.
v59.0 Isoscape v3.0.0 1 1

Improved

  • Key-free basemaps for the 2D map.

Data

  • Isoscape v3.0.0: new δ¹⁸O (175 km) and δ²H (275 km) grids, 905 months each (1950-01 – 2025-05).
v58.0 Landing page 1 1

New

  • Redesigned landing page with a live globe in the background.

Improved

  • NetCDF export in preparation.
v55.0 2D map 1 1

New

  • 2D map view alongside the 3D globe.

Fixed

  • Globe hover showed the value of the neighbouring cell near the grid edge.
v50.0 Two isotopes 1

New

  • δ²H next to δ¹⁸O, with per-isotope colour scales and statistics.
v45.0 Time series and ranges 2

New

  • Point time-series extraction with CSV export.
  • ZIP download of a range of months.
v40.0 Native resolution 1

Improved

  • Lossless rendering at the native 0.1° resolution with the exact cell value on hover.
